Downtown Rooftop Shindig

Wednesday August 3rd

This is a free event that happens every month during the summer on the top level of the Theatre Square garage. The mini festival is put on by the Pittsburgh Filmmakers group and features movie showings and live music. If you go to the August 3rd edition of Downtown Rooftop Shindig you’ll be able to hear music from Brightside and see the timeless John Hughes film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Bring a hearty appetite too because vendors will be there serving handcrafted food, specialty cocktails and local beer. The gates open at 6:00 pm, the music starts at 7:00 and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off will begin when the sun goes down around 8:30.

Station Square Summer Jam

Friday August 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th.

Here we have another free event featuring live music happening this summer. Station Square is one of Pittsburgh’s coolest historic areas thanks to the city heavily investing in restoration projects at the old train station. Summer Jam is a celebration of local and national music that spans the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s. The August Summer Jam concerts will feature a Credence Clearwater Revival tribute band, the former lead singer for Grand Funk Railroad, and other local acts rockin’ the riverfront every Friday.

Midweek Music in Market Square

Wednesday August 3rd, 10th and 17th

Pittsburgh sure does love putting on free concerts! The Midweek Music in Market Square is a little different from the previous two events because it happens during the middle of the day. Market Square is a popular place for downtown professionals to grab lunch, and during the summer months 100.7 Star FM hosts a concert series from 11:30-1:30 for those who can stick around for a little while. August will feature performances by Billy the Kid, Alex Talbot and Jay Wiley of the Hawkeyes.

Crafts and Drafts: Paper from Hops

Friday August 12

The Society for Contemporary Craft features cutting edge exhibitions focused on non-mainstream art, and this event is no exception. If you’ve ever been on a brewery tour you know that beer manufacturing leaves a lot of natural byproducts behind after the beer is made. At the 6:00 pm Crafts and Drafts event, guests can take these leftover grains, fibers and vines and turn them into unique handcrafted papers. Of course, there will also be actual beer served at the event to aid the creative process. Tickets are $35 each and the price of admission includes two complimentary beverages to get you started.

Savor Pittsburgh

Thursday August 25th

Pittsburgh foodies aren’t going to want to miss out on this special event featuring some of the city’s finest chefs. This is the 11th year of Savor Pittsburgh where Pittsburgh culinary artists wow guests with cocktails, appetizers, entrees and desserts from Pittsburgh’s finest restaurants. This year’s event is held at Stage AE on the Northshore where chefs will be competing for “Dish of the Year” honors. General Admission tickets are $75 and part of the proceeds from the night will go to the Magee Women’s Foundation.
