Five Tips for Decorating your Pittsburgh Apartments
May 25th, 2017 by Ryan Sundling

Are you ready to have an apartment that drops your friends’ jaws? Well, that will require you to move on from living like you’re still waiting for your mom to come over and decorate your place. When you choose to live at SkyVue apartments in Pittsburgh, you’re choosing to give your lifestyle a major upgrade. In this week’s blog, we’ll be talking about some little things you can do to add some maturity to your Pittsburgh apartments. Having a home that you feel comfortable in can go a long way towards improving day to day happiness levels.
Here are five ways to make it seem like your apartment is owned by a well-adjusted adult, even if you’re still struggling to get yourself to wake up on time.
#1. Get some art, but make sure it’s framed.
Art can be extremely expensive, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Most people have a friend or two who enjoys painting, drawing or take photographs in their spare time. All you have to do to turn that amateur art into a professional-looking piece is add a frame. Don’t believe us? Try it out on any random poster or sketch you have laying around your house. A nice wooden frame does wonders for wall-art, which saves your bank account from being drained every time you want to add some decor to your apartment.
#2. Pick one piece of furniture to splurge on
Let’s be clear on this. We aren’t telling you to decorate your apartment like it’s one of those fancy living rooms that looks like a museum. You know the kind, where no one is allowed to actually sit on the furniture and everything looks like it’s from the Victorian Age. No, all we’re saying is that one nice piece can really bring a room together. High end couches are incredibly expensive, so we recommend splurging on something smaller like an end-table or a corner chair.
Once you’ve locked down your one expensive piece of furniture, you can look for more affordable pieces to complement it. A couch from Goodwill or Craigslist will look a lot better if it matches a high-end chair. Who knows, some people might even think you went out and bought a matching set!
#3. Adulting is all about accessories
Next time you go into someone’s apartment and you’re blown away by how nice it looks, think about why that is. Is it because they bought the most expensive furniture? Probably not. What’s more likely is that they learned how to accessorize well. We’re talking about acquiring lamps, lampshades, plants, candles and the like. Obviously the first step to making an apartment seem like home is ensuring that you have the basic necessities. After that, however, you can start really making the place your own with trinkets and accessories that let you express your own sense of style.
#4. Spend some time at thrift shops and estate sales
Remember how we talked about acquiring pieces that would complement your one high end piece? These are the places to do it. Estate sales are especially cool because you can often find really nice pieces for very reasonable prices. Thrift shops are a little more hit or miss, but at least you’re guaranteed to find things that are affordable. Avoid big box stores when you’re shopping for your apartment. You’ll likely either end up overpaying or buying something that’s not well made, which will cost you more in the long run once it breaks.
